Squeakybrat Staff Update Day 21

Location: West End, Tortola
Author: Griffin, Sierra, and Megan
We have had such a fun and rewarding time with the Squeaky family these past three weeks. Each one of the shipmates has truly taken themselves to the next level, not just by obtaining their IYT certification and PADI open water diving certifications, but through fellow shipping with each other and mentorship provided by all the AQ staff. It was inspiring to watch each student bring their unique talents and personalities to the table. Amelia and Fritz really set the water sports bar high when they showed up the first rotation day at Pond Bay pro status. Moving onto the longest sail day, Max T was willing to demonstrate some sailing skills to the rest of the group. After a long and exciting day of rotation activities, Max H broke out some pretty cool dance moves at the beach barbecue on Vixen Point. Jared rose the watersports bar even higher when he showed up with his ski gloves and showed us how it’s done on the slalom ski. In the underwater world, Amanda and Emily were naturals after breaking out of the confined water and into open water dives. During sail training day Elyah performed a perfect man overboard drill, rescuing our fender Jeremiah, while Jenny did a splendid pick up with the boat hook, ensuring that our man overboard was back on board successfully and safely. Joaquin impressed us all with his underwater navigation skills on open water dive four and successfully led us on a little tour. On the big race day, Sydney was an outstanding skipper and made sure we all knew the plan of action by showing us the charts. Every time we needed to anchor, Marta was always there to assist in a smooth operation. Overall, we couldn’t have been happier with how the session turned out. Each shipment has been a joy to be around, and we look forward to seeing them all back next year! date: Jul 28, 2017

Day 20

Location: West End, Tortola
Author: Jared M.
After waking up early, Griff took me to the skipper’s meeting so I could learn the path of the race. I came back and we left. We raised the sails and lined up. The countdown from 5,4,3,2,1 we all left the line and raced to the navigational marker. There was no wind so it was super slow. We ended up coming in 4th place. Then it was time to clean. We were cleaning every surface of the boat, organized everyone’s rooms, cleaned the fridge, and scrubbed the decks. Then we got shore time, then the BBQ, then our last time together. It’s been a good summer, until next time. date: Jul 27, 2017

Hike on Salt Island

Location: The Bight, Norman Island
Author: Joaquin M.
The morning today was pretty normal and quiet. We woke up rather early, then motored over to the RMS Rhone shipwreck dive site. Before we went diving we had our basic sailing test, which we all passed pretty well. After the sailing test, we went diving at the Rhone wreck. The dive of the Rhone was definitely the highlight of the day. Not only was it our deepest dive yet, but also the best one. We saw all the coral growing on the +100-year-old wreck, as well as the fish and animals living in them. After we dried up we went for a small hike on Salt Island, where we saw what was arguably the best view in the trip. Once we went down the hill we passed the burial site of the victims of the Rhone and we had our last swim in the BVI, where we messed around for a good time enjoying our last swim in the ocean. Once we got out, we cruised over to The Bight. The rest of the afternoon was spent on the boat. Tonight we will be writing our cards to the other shipmates and the staff. date: Jul 26, 2017

Today Tracey and I woke everyone up with a bang, literally. It was pretty funny to be fair. We had a bit of a lie in as we didn’t need to do much until shore time. When we got to shore we all had a few hours to have a nice lunch and a milkshake. The town there was very big and had quite a few nice shops and restaurants. We then got back at about 5 in time for dinner which was breakfast dinner which was well done by the cooks. After dinner, we had a pretty fun food fight with everyone, with fruit and other stuff. Have a great day y’all. date: Jul 25, 2017
