Arrival Day!
Location: West End, Tortola
The crew of Soul Rebel is bursting with excitement to meet the new crew of shipmates and welcome them aboard. Joe, Gene, Izy, and Griffin have been working hard to prepare everything over the last few days. The dive gear’s been inspected, the PFDs counted, and the food stowed. Our home for the next two weeks is shipshape, and we cannot wait for the ten new shipmates to arrive to complete our Soul Rebel family.
We’re looking forward to donning our SCUBA tanks and exploring beautiful reefs the British Virgin Islands have to offer. For now, Joe, Gene, Izy, and Griffin will be waiting to see the first ferry with shipmates arrive.
Here’s an intro to the crew of Soul Rebel.
Joe - Skipper and Marine Biologist
Joe was born and raised in Bolton, UK. He discovered his passion for the marine world when training to become a freediving instructor. After that, he did a master’s degree in Marine Ecology at the University of the Balearic Islands in Mallorca. He learned to sail in the wild and windy waters of the UK and is super excited to bring his passion for marine ecology and sailing to all the shipmates at ActionQuest!
Gene - Dive Instructor
Gene is a Dive Instructor from New Zealand who loves traveling and the ocean. He has worked in Japan, Canada, Greece, Norway, and now the Caribbean! He learned to sail in the Royal New Zealand Navy. In the winter, Gene chases the snow and teaches snowboarding and skiing. He enjoys building Lego, Volunteer Firefighting, and walking his dogs around his hometown when not under or on the water.
Izy - Dive Instructor
Izy has been working in experiential education since 2019 and can’t wait to share her love of the marine ecosystem with fellow adventurers. She took her first breaths underwater while aboard a Seamester program in 2018. Izy earned her divemaster certification at Marine Conservation Philippines, where she learned about the marine ecosystem and how to protect it for future generations. She became an instructor to unite her passion for the environment with her love of youth development and is so excited to see what her students will accomplish. When she is not teaching scuba, Izy loves to backpack, climb, and spend time with her awesome nieces and nephew.
Griffin - Divemaster and mate
Griffin grew up in Maine and Colorado. He first got dive-certified onboard Argo in 2017. After graduating from Colby College in 2019, Griffin has worked onboard schooners, as a wooden boat builder, and as a commercial diver, pretty much anything that keeps him near the ocean. Griffin can be found sailing, swimming, skating, skiing, or sewing shorts when not at work. He is excited to trade the cold seas of the Northeast for the warmer Caribbean waters!
