Location: Mountain Point, Virgin Gorda

It’s been an eventful first ten days on Spindrift! After leaving West End with Nathan on the helm, we sailed our way to Norman Island, where we started the scuba component of the voyage. Our dive instructor Steve has been teaching the advanced open water divers- Patrick, Sam, Jeremy, Alex, Elena, Mary, and Faith. Our new divers, Chris, Nathan, Will, Chloe, and Celine, are working their way towards certification with Astrid’s dive instructor, Pippa. We have had several good sails- to Gorda Sound, and Anegada, the northernmost island in the BVI. All shipmates have taken the helm and are learning how to sail by the compass and by points of sail. Jeremy and Faith have also been at the helm for our two dockings at Spanishtown and Leverick Bay. Today we finished our fifth rotation day. Charlie and Kristine helped teach the non-diving rotations, which include waterskiing/wakeboarding, Picos, windsurfing, dinghy driving, mooring pickups, man overboard drills, 19 ft. Rhodes sailing, and knot tying. While the majority of the program happens on or in the water, we have also had a few shore excursions, such as the world famous Baths on Virgin Gorda. We also gathered with Lifeworks and the diving catamarans for a beach BBQ on Prickly Pear Island, and all the shipmates got to dance to their heart’s content. Although for our shipmate Will, every day is a dance party! Between activities, we have some downtime; playing cards and making friendship bracelets have been popular activities. Everyone has spent several hours in the galley, cooking everyone food. Mary is our current french toast pro. Elena and Alex made some excellent veggie burgers, Will and Chloe nailed Mexican night, and Celine and Nathan impressed with risotto and chicken caesar salad night! All the meals have been delicious- we haven’t had anything get burned or destroyed or dropped! Tonight everyone is eagerly awaiting summertime Thanksgiving. Although everyone has an assigned cabin, most of the shipmates have tried sleeping out on the deck or in one of the hammocks. Sam, Celine, and Jeremy, in particular, seem to prefer sleeping under the stars. So even though we’ve done a lot already, we’re not finished yet! The action will continue with more sailing (maybe some racing!), certified divers, more watersports, and of course, getting to know each other better and better!
