Location: Sandy Spit, Green Cay
Today we started off with a later sleep-in and a slow morning(which we all needed from the hike yesterday). We had French toast and blueberry muffins for breakfast. Today was our sailing practical exam which began with a review of knots and the parts of the boat. We split off into three groups to review —> Group one: Me, Stella, Kellen, and Matthew (and Aidan); Group 2: Evan, Lyla, Thomas, and Kate (and Beth) and finally, group 3: Claire, Hays, and Meredith with Allie. Group 3 was the first to finish their review and exams. Once the review was finished, we detached from the mooring ball and went on our way to complete man overboard drills. Each group had to successfully save one ‘person’ (aka Ricky the Fender) who fell overboard. The first two groups completed their saves quickly and successfully, but group 3 was hit with a curveball when Aidan and Allie threw in 2 fenders instead of one. When Claire left to save the fenders on the dinghy with Aidan, he couldn’t drive close enough for her to reach it, so they had to loop around many times. After man overboard, I drove the boat over to sandy spit while everyone took their midday naps. Once arriving in Sandy Spit, we ate up some scrumptious deli sandwiches. PB and J. Lyla thought it was hilarious when Hays very weirdly abandoned his Sammy on the table, and I suggested we play musical sandwiches with it. Also, Stella spilled jam all across the floor.
After lunch, Claire, Mer, and I went to the island for a couple of hours while everyone took naps. On the island, Claire and I did some beach yoga and swam, then we all buried Aidan in the sand and made him a mermaid! Once we got back, all of us got showered before dinner. To kill time, we read, and some of us still had to take our knot test. For dinner, we had rice and beans with hot dogs, which spiked a very deep group conversation about “What everyone’s favorite type of beans is.” Aidan, Hays, and Stella claim that edamame is a bean, and after googling, they are correct. Hays’ favorite type of bean is booger peas. After dinner, Hays and Lyla made a tower out of different foods. Then we ate cake and went night night.
