Day 9
Salt Island and the Rhone

It’s Huddy, today’s skipper. The day started off with a sail over to Salt Island. The majority of the boat was still asleep while Catalina and Nathan set out some oatmeal for us to eat while underway. Once arrived, Jaden, Wesley, Tyler, and Parker cleaned up the dishes while my brother Lordy put them all away. Then, Lexi and Alana deckied the boat. Then, we all got into our hiking gear, hopped into the dinghy, and headed over to Salt Island. With a quick history lesson about the island and the Rhone, we set off on our hike, which lasted about 20 minutes.

From the top of the mountain, we could see parts of the Rhone as well as the giant rock which made it crash. Our boat was, of course, the first one up and the first one down, so while waiting to get picked up by a dinghy, we sat on this rickety old dock, and the rest of the groups eventually came down as well. Back on the boat, we set up our dive gear and had a pre-dive briefing. The dive lasted around 37 minutes with a max depth of 73 feet. On the dive, we got to go through a part of the wreck, which was very dark, making it difficult to see. Towards the end, we went through a smaller part of the wreck, which had thousands of small fish. After the dive, the chefs prepared mac and cheese for us to eat for lunch on our sail back to Peter Island. While Catalina and Nathan made lunch, the rest of us slept on the top of the boat. Once we arrived, our gear was set up once again, and we were briefed for a rescue dive. On the dive, we practiced various scenarios such as out-of-air diver, tired diver, and panicked going to the surface diver underwater. We also went in buddy pairs and hid while another pair swam in either a U or square pattern to find us. Eve, Lexi, Nathan, Alana, Parker, and Lordy all completed theirs successfully. Back on the boat, we all took our ocean showers and completed Chapter 5 of our rescue books before our lecture tonight. Catalina and Nathan also prepared Mexican food for us to eat for dinner while the dishes were cleaned up from lunch. To end the day, we cleaned up from dinner and prepared our laundry. And finally, it was time for bed.
