Day 2: White Bay, Peter Island
Everyone sleeping outside this morning woke up to rain and wet hammocks. Although it was a wet morning, it was an enjoyable one with a cereal and fresh cantaloupe breakfast. Before we could leave Tortola, there was one last step: a meeting with the program director, Big Mike. After an informative meeting with all the other boats, we set sail for Peter Island! The ride to the island was many things, but smooth was not one of them. But the promise of our first dive made it all worth it. We ate on the ride over so we would have plenty of energy for our swim test. Once our suits were on, we hopped in the water for the five laps around the boat, followed by 10 minutes of treading. Our swim skills got an A+ from Kyler, Perry, and Emma (our instructors). Then we finally jumped in the water for our long-awaited first dive. We did our skills check led by Kyler and Perry. Kylie, Juno, Antonio, Julia, Josie, and Maren went with Perry, while Ellie, Ari, Tyler, Sonja, Emi, and Mahe went with Kyler. Most of us completed the skills check with no trouble, except for a couple of us (don’t worry, we’re fine) who will complete the dive tomorrow. After the dive, we had our first ocean shower. Here on Vela Vita, fresh water is limite,d so to conserve, we take ocean showers! In three short steps—swim, soap, swim again—we were done. An unusual shower, but it gets the job done. We ended the day with sloppy joes and a Big, Ultra, (dive) Knowledge Review. After a great first (full) day, we’re starting to get the hang of the way things work on the boat.
Signing off,
