Location: The Bight, Norman Island
Day 2: Christina:
After a long night of on-and-off rain, we all woke up around seven and had breakfast. In the salon, we found Henry sleeping on a bench, which was odd because he had fallen asleep in his hammock. He told us that he woke up in a puddle in his hammock and moved inside. Once we had eaten breakfast, we all got dressed and made our way to Pussers (an outdoor restaurant on shore) to hear Mike’s safety speech. Luckily, we got there early and got to sit in chairs instead of on the floor. Before the speech, Stella and I spotted a stray cat. She pet it, but I was afraid of it having fleas, so I just took a photo. Once we made our way back to the boat, we put on our PFDs, took our group photo, and left Sopper’s Hole. We put all our lines and fenders away, but somehow missed a fender on the left side of the bow, so Giles went and got it. During our sail to the bight, Mateo, Shawn, and Giles raised the main sail, and some of us took turns steering the boat. Lauryl helped furled the jib in, even though it was her first time sailing. When we got to the bight, we ate sandwiches for lunch.
Then we took our swim test; we had to swim around the boat 5 times, then had to tread for 10 minutes. During the 10 minutes, we asked Zoe how long she could tread water, but she avoided the question…I think she can’t swim that well. Right after that, we went to Nomada Carabeña to snorkel. We all swam into a cave, and Hayes tried to throw rocks through a hole in the cave wall. After doing a dive on another boat because he only needed two more dives to get his open water certification, Nate joined us for our snorkel. After the snorkel, we hung out on the other boat and swam around some more. Lawson tried to do a back flip off the dinghy but failed, then Zoe did a really good one right after to show off. After his failed backflip, Lawson put an apple in the other boat’s exhaust. He promptly got yelled at by the staff. We went back to the boat and took our first ocean shower. We had sloppy joes for dinner with our special guest, Mike. Then we did a brief sail talk from Riley about going underway.
