British Virgin Islands - 2023, Session 1

Welcome to Odyssey

Location: West End, Tortola

Good morning. It is a bright and sunny day, and the docks are buzzing with anticipation. The team has been working hard for the past couple of days to prepare for the arrival of the students. The time has finally come! Welcome to Odyssey. Here’s our team…

Gwen- Skipper

Born in New England and raised in an active family, Gwen became a water sports enthusiast early in life. Surprisingly she was not introduced to sailing until she spent a semester in the Caribbean aboard Seamester’s S/Y Ocean Star in 2013. After a life-changing experience with Seamester, Gwen joined the ActionQuest/GoBeyond team as a Wilderness First Responder in 2014. Since then, Gwen has earned her Master of Yachts 200ton certificate, and she returns for her seventh summer in the BVI after a few years away as a skipper. When she is not in the BVI, Gwen lives in Vermont, where she works as a teacher, coach, and administrator at a winter sports academy.

Anthony- Dive Instructor

Anthony started his journey with GXG as a student with ActionQuest, where he fell in love with the lifestyle and the people he was surrounded by. After a short 21 days, Anthony knew he wanted to continue sailing and scuba diving. While attending ActionQuest, he saw S/Y Argo on the horizon and was told about Seamester by his skipper, Jake. He went on to spend three of the best months of his life onboard S/Y Vela. The trip opened his eyes to a whole new way of living, and he knew he couldn’t stop there, so he went to Key Largo, FL, where he spent several weeks gaining knowledge and training to become a PADI Scuba Instructor. Anthony is super excited to pass on the knowledge and experiences he had to the students at AQ this summer!

Arden- Mate/Medic

Arden grew up in Boulder, Colorado, and has always had an affinity for spending time in the outdoors. Despite living in a land-locked state, she had always loved the ocean and dreamed of being a marine biologist as a kid. Arden discovered her love for sailing during a transatlantic Seamester voyage on S/Y Vela from Rome to the Caribbean. After receiving a rescue diver certification on this trip, Arden became interested in the medical component of this work and added a Wilderness First Responder certification to her skillset. She loves sailing, diving, collecting seashells, and water sports! Arden also enjoys working with kids. Previously, she worked as a mentor for students in middle and high school. She currently attends a university in London, pursuing her degree in international relations. Arden has traveled to over 20 countries and loves connecting with new people and cultures. She is excited to escape the London fog for some summer adventures.

Stay tuned for upcoming adventures.
