Staff Update: Day 1
Location: West End, Tortola
The crew of Imane is bursting with excitement to meet their new crew of shipmates and welcome them to aboard! Shona, Hannah, and Kevin have been working hard preparing everything over the last week. All of our PFDs are counted, bunks are made, food is stowed, the lines are coiled and ready to be cast away. Our home for the next 21 days is shipshape, and we cannot wait for the 12 new shipmates to arrive to complete our Imane family. With a collection of old and new students participating in different programs like Vega, Carina, and Polaris, we are looking forward to a great wealth of knowledge to be shared and lifelong memories to be made. The crew can’t wait to show all of you the beautiful island coves and tropical beaches in the British Virgin Islands to the students. For now, Shona, Hannah, and Kevin will be waiting patiently for the first students to arrive on the island, soak up the sun, and bring good trade winds our way.
Here is an introduction to the crew of Imane:
Shona- Skipper/Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician
Shona is returning for her fifth summer with ActionQuest and is more excited than ever to return to her second family and the amazing waters of the British Virgin Islands. She graduated in 2013 with a degree in outdoor education and geography. Since then, she has worked in several locations across Europe, applying these skills to promote learning through experiential education. From a young age, she has had a love for the outdoors and all sports, whether that be sailing and kayaking in the summer or snowboarding and mountaineering in the winter. Her goal is to inspire and educate her students in a fun, safe learning environment. Shona holds certifications as an RYA Yachtmaster and Wilderness EMT.
Hannah- Dive Instructor/Mate
Hannah started at ActionQuest as a shipmate in 2014. After three summers in the BVI, she went on to become a PADI instructor, intending to certify her younger sister when she is old enough. Hannah’s love of the ocean has driven not only her passion for diving but also her interest in conservation and sustainable development. She is currently studying environmental engineering at Cornell and also teaches open water scuba at the school. When she is not diving, Hannah loves skiing, snowboarding, reading, and surfing.
Kevin- Mate/ Wilderness First Responder
Kevin is a certified Wilderness First Responder and has been leading trips for Bowdoin’s Outing Club for the past four years, including everything from flatwater canoeing trips to backpacking along the Appalachian Trail. At Bowdoin, Kevin has also been a whitewater kayaking instructor and raft guide. He loves watching students go from learning techniques in the pool to then putting their skills to use on the river. When he’s not busy in the great outdoors, Kevin is an avid musician, baseball fan, and board game enthusiast.
