Staff Update Day 1
Location: West End, Tortola
We are so excited for our 13 new shipmates to arrive and finally kick off the summer! We have had an action-packed week preparing the boat, cleaning, loading with food, water, and all manner of diving equipment. This year we have shipmates coming for both Dolphin and Neptune programs from all corners of the United States. We hope you’re all as excited as we are!
Here is an introduction to the crew of Changes in Latitude:
Tim- Skipper/Dive Instructor
Coming from all the way across the pond Tim has spent much of his life on and around the water. Starting sailing from a young age, Tim has represented Great Britain at an international level in some classes. He continued to both compete and coach while studying history at the University of Southampton, and since graduating has been working and traveling his way around the world. During a stint in Australia, he spent 18 months working on a catamaran off the Queensland coast as first mate, where he sought to spend as much time as possible on or under the water. After this, he moved to Rarotonga in the Cook Islands to become a scuba instructor and continues to stay either on, in, or as close to the ocean as social norms allow. Beyond this, his hobbies include surfing, skiing, and kickboxing.
Lauren- Dive Instructor/Mate
Lauren spent her first summer as part of the ActionQuest team in 2017. She is a dive instructor and primarily works with the marine biology program at AQ. She has been diving for six years and studied marine biology at the University of South Florida, which has taken her around the world to places like Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, and Fiji. She has also worked as an outdoor leader, guiding paddling, caving, snorkeling, and hiking trips. Most recently she has worked as delivery crew for transits between Florida and the Caribbean and then as maintenance crew on a tall ship. Lauren is a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer, an Emergency First Responder Instructor, and a Wilderness First Responder. When Lauren isn’t spending time on a sailboat, you can find her rock climbing, backpacking, or on a mission to find the perfect donuts and tacos.
Mara- Dive Instructor/Mate
Mara grew up in New York City and first came to AQ in 2013 as a new shipmate eager to learn sailing and diving for the first time. After four summers sailing as a student, she was completely hooked and went on to become a staff member. She recently took a gap year from college to sail with Sea|mester aboard S/Y Argo, crossing the Indian Ocean from Australia to South Africa, and traveling to get her dive instructor certification. She loves everything to do with the ocean and travel and could not possibly be more excited to work for the program that was so formative for her as a teenager. Mara will go on to attend the College of the Holy Cross this upcoming fall.
