British Virgin Islands - 2013, Session 3

Staff Update Day 1

Location: West End, Tortola

The first day of third session, here we go! Mitch, Tucker, and I are very excited to meet our new shipmates and get back out on the water. We have spent the past couple of days preparing our vessel, the beautiful Laurasia, and now all we need are our shipmates! We will set sail with a total of 9 shipmates. Two of them, Julia and Adeline, are with the Quest sailing program, and they will also assist the Lifeworks program with various projects, including turtle tagging and data collection for the BVI's Department of Conservation and Fisheries. Ryan, Max W., Sebastian, Marti, Max A., Leandra, and Wyatt will be working on sailing certifications as well, in addition to getting their Open Water Diver certifications. Tomorrow, we will sail out of West End, Tortola, and begin our journey throughout the British Virgin Islands!

Here is an introduction to the crew of Laurasia:

Mitch, adventurer, fine food connoisseur and most importantly, sailor, joined ActionQuest in 2008 after his voyage aboard Sea|mester vessel Ocean Star. During the past six years, he has finished his Communications undergrad from the University of Utah while successfully skiing the worlds best powder. Mitchell is a seasoned EMT and currently holds a leadership role in sailing and staff operations at ActionQuest. He most looks forward to teaching the youth valuable life lessons while living aboard and sailing a yacht.

Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, Tucker found his love for the water and scuba diving as a shipmate of ActionQuest in 2006. After attending ActionQuest for multiple years and graduating high school, he knew he needed to move closer to the water. He found himself attending the University of Miami where he studied environmental engineering but could also be close to the ocean. After completing his open water scuba instructor along with his CPR and first aid instructor, Tucker decided to return to ActionQuest as an instructor to further develop and spread his passion for the water.

This year will be Quincey's first summer with ActionQuest, and she is incredibly excited to be working as an EMT. Quincey is a certified basic EMT and Rescue Diver and is working towards attaining her Divemaster certification. She has recently graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelors in Human Development, where she took many classes pertaining specifically to adolescent development. Quincey is passionate about food and healthy lifestyles, and she plans to continue her education in the direction of holistic nutrition and health.
