Location: West End
I have had the great opportunity to be involved with the ActionQuest setup process for the last two months, and am stoked to finally see shipmates walking down the dock. I left the cold mountains of Vermont to come down early and be a part of the extensive logistics that are the backbone of any ActionQuest expedition. Most shipmates and even staff don’t know about how difficult it is to get all the right pieces in place to send more than a dozen boats out on the water for three weeks. I spent six weeks of the spring in Sarasota doing equipment maintenance on compressors and regulators and helping with paperwork and the impressive container load. If you haven’t seen the video of us loading that, check it out on Facebook- it’s awesome. Then I got down to West End and started putting things together- training new staff and unpacking all the food and supplies. Things are looking really good right now and its amazing how far we have come, from just being on the dock with Ocean Star two weeks ago, to thirteen boats and a ton of dinghies all around the dock today. It’s starting to heat up down here, so getting off the dock and into the wind is going to be great! This is the beginning of an amazing summer and I am so excited to once again have the opportunity to sail with ActionQuest.
Here is an introduction to the crew of Love of My Life:
Sam- skipper/dive instructor
After graduating from Wake Forest University in 2004, Sam followed his passion for the water and travel, working as a Sailing and Scuba Diving instructor in Costa Rica, Thailand, and Belize. Sam joined AQ, in 2007 and is now the director of the BVI Diving program. He holds certifications as an MCA Master of Yachts 200 Ton, PADI IDC Staff Instructor, and Advanced Medic at Sea. An avid traveler, he can be found seeking out new adventures abroad, from paragliding in the Alps to jungle trekking in Sumatra.
Ben- dive instructor/mate
Ben graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in Political Science, and began working with AQ in 2009 as a PADI Scuba Instructor. An avid outdoorsman, Ben can either be found in the mountains of Vermont, working in the ski industry and spending his free time on the slopes, or racing in a Cyclocross team in Portland, Oregon. During the summer Ben enjoys showing off the incredible shipwrecks and diverse sea life of the BVI to the ActionQuest shipmates, as well as free diving with the Tarpons and Barracuda that like to hang out under the boats.
Kelli- dive instructor/mate
Kelli was born and raised on a remote island in southeast Alaska. For many summers she crewed on commercial fishing vessels for Alaskan salmon. Yes, it was exactly like the TV show, The Deadliest Catch ;). In high school, Kelli instantly fell in love with sailing and scuba diving while vacationing in the BVIs. Since then, she sailed across the Atlantic Ocean with Seamester. She also spent six months in Thailand completing her diving internship with Mermaids Dive Center. She has her USCG Master 100 Ton Inland certification and is a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor. Kelli likes wreck diving, Chai tea, her dog Penny, and sailing around on her 25ft sailboat back home in Alaska.
