Today we all woke up with a lot of excitement for the final race! After breakfast, all the skippers attended a meeting to go over the track and tacking points. Soon Wind Shadow was putting on zinc paints and motoring to the starting line. The countdown started as the boats were raising their mains, and as soon as we heard 3…2…1… jibs were let out, and the race began. During the race, all the students had a lot of fun on the bow as we passed through choppy waves. After about 30 minutes it was time to tack! Wind Shadow was in the first place, and as we got closer and closer to the green mark, the tension was building in the cockpit. Elena was on the helm and led a race tack. We turned super quickly and were literally an inch from hitting the buoy, but we made it. Unfortunately, Lascaris started gaining on us, and after we made a necessary tack, they became first place. Although we didn’t win, there is still so much team spirit on board as we do the final cleanup of our 17 days at sea back at West End where we started the program and became our own little family.
