Location: The Bight, Norman Island, BVI
Today has been eventful, to say the least. From the time we left the dock to dinner, it has truly been Action-packed. We began this sunshiny day with a filling breakfast of cereal and fruit. After a briefing from our skipper and mate, the dynamic duo Kris and Brit, we were allotted some shore time to purchase a few last-minute necessities- and by necessities, I mean candy, chips, and granola bars. The Squeakers then joined the rest of the fleet on the dock for an orientation to the Action Quest program with Mike. Soon afterward, we were clearing the lines and getting ready to depart from the dock to begin our first sail together. Alex and Christian were extremely enthused to be setting sail for the first time ever! Lydia raised the mainsail; Billy tended the main sheet, Griffin and Alex managed the jib, as we tacked our way to the Bight. Alex, Matt, and I teamed up to make lunch, and both boys learned how to properly cut a tomato. During lunch, Christian and Alex both had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the first time- and although we still couldn’t get Kris to enjoy peanut butter, they loved it! Brit, Marco, and Matt formed the first anchor team of the trip and set both anchors safely, quickly, and securely. Everyone piled into the dinghy to go on a hike to Spyglass Lookout- a 20-minute hike to an awesome view of Norman Island in its entirety. Lydia was the first one to reach the top while Jane and I took our time climbing the trail. After a solid discussion about goals and the trip in general at the top of Spyglass Lookout, we headed back down the trail to get back to the Squeaker’s home base and take our swim tests. We all passed with flying colors and enjoyed the beautiful, blue, Caribbean water together for the first time. Tonight Matt and Kris prepared Sloppy Joe’s, salad, corn, and mashed potatoes. After trying a Sloppy Joe for the first time, Marco developed a new found love of Sloppy Joe’s. We earned the title of favorite boat of the fleet tonight for being the first boat to have Mike and Craig join us for dinner and a chilled out post-Sloppy Joe discussion on strengths and weaknesses. Overall its been a long yet rewarding day for the shipmates and staff of Squeaky B. I can’t wait for all of the new adventures our boat is about to embark on!
