Today was a great 4th of July, where we woke up feeling rested. I think that the most exciting part of the day was going to the Billabong Sanctuary! We got a great tour of the facility and learned about all of the animals native to Australia, including koalas, crocodiles, and wombats. We even got to hold the cute little koalas as well as a snake and young crocodile and feed the kangaroos. After lunch, we headed to the top of the Castle Hill, the large rock formation in the center of Townsville, where we got an amazing view of the city and nearby ocean. When we got back to the hostel, we found out that Carolyn had organized a photo scavenger hunt, and we broke up into teams to go find things throughout town like the largest didgeridoo and the most Australian thing on a menu – and my team won! But the best part of the day was our fantastic dinner, a barbecue to celebrate the 4thof July, complete with hot dogs, sausages, burgers and even some kangaroo-kabobs (as well as corn, broccoli, and mac n’ cheese). We are going to sleep happy and full, with along day ahead of us as we travel up north to the Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation.
