BVI: Session 1 - Catalinaville

Just Another Typical 3 Dive Day

Location: Mountain Point, Virgin Gorda

Look at the horizon, place your hand over your regulator and mask, and take one giant stride forward. These were the instructions I gave to the 6 different open water divers I worked with during their confined water dives in the small pen we set up this morning. Most of the boat had the pleasure of diving twice today with younger shipmates. However, four of us get to go on a night dive as the ocean during the day and night is so different. When you descend in the dark it seems like it will never end but suddenly; when your flashlight illuminates the bottom it is like discovering a new planet and the excitement fills you up. This is the reason why I dive and why ActionQuest is the greatest place ever! That and the fact that the people here are all so awesome. Right now Hannah and Nick are cooking chicken Caesar salad and risotto as we watch the sun set from the best place in the BVI to watch it from: Mountain Point. This is where the sun sets perfectly in-between a distant island and the sky turns a beautiful shade of pink and orange. Once the sunsets, the real fun begins and the night dives with commence. I hope that we will see plenty of tarpon fish and maybe if were lucky and octopus. All I know, is, I cant wait to play with the glow-sticks we attach to our tanks during the dive! Night is upon us so I have to get going. Until next time!

Work or Play?

Location: Vixen Point, Gorda Sound

As the last of the crew finished their first rotations working with AQ Instructors to teach open water and advanced scuba students, the rest of the crew remained in our beautiful spot in Vixen Point. We practiced our rescue scenarios, Emergency First Response Skills and tests for the same. After all the work and stress of the past several days, the crew enjoyed some free time, also known as naptime. Tonight is the long awaited BBQ, and a time to enjoy ourselves as we continue our training.

Stress Test

Location: Vixen Point, Gorda Sound
Author: Hannah W.
Today today started strong with some fantastic french toast made by some fantastic people. We spent the day working on Divemaster skills and helping sail-side out on dives by distributing gear. The DMs had to do the stress test” change all of our gear with our buddies while buddy breathing. It was tough but every one made it through. Then we practiced rescue skills and as a group lost 3 masks and four weight belts. All in all, an A1 day. The garden burgers for dinner will be the perfect end to an action packed day. XOXO.

Day 5

Location: Vixen Point, Gorda Sound
Author: Max A.
Skipper’s Log- Star Date: Day 5. Our day began at around six this morning when we were awoken by Simon and promptly loaded into Crush along with some scuba gear. More dinghies arrived at the beach filled to the brim with tanks, regs, masks, fins and BCDs. We set up gear on the beach for confined open water and navigation dives for less advanced AQ members. We triumphantly returned to the boat to find breakfast already laid out on the table. After scarfing down our food, we split up for the day. Several of us were in the water assisting in diving classes, several were on shore duty, and 6 were doing a handful of graded skills in the water with Simon. We did our respective activities in the morning and switched roles in the afternoon. Throughout the day, there were many tank runs between our boat, Manic, the beach and the constant lugging of gear around the beach as divers came out of the water. Lets just say it was a long day. Our dinner tonight was well earned.
