Staff Update Day 17

Location: West End, Tortola
Author: Griffin, Andy, and Ashley
The shipmates on Calypso have had an awesome 17 day adventure sailing and scuba diving around the BVI. As it comes to an end, everyone gathers together to reflect on just how special it has been. From the very beginning the group clicked and from then have just grown closer and closer. All the shipmates have gained their IYT and PADI certifications, all ending with a beautiful morning sail over to the RMS Rhone dive site to do their first dive as certified divers. On the sailing side everyone completed sailing circles, man overboards, trimming the sails, and bringing Calypso all around the BVI. Apart from the sailing and diving, the team has been busy wakeboarding, knee boarding, windsurfing, dinghy driving, knot tying and having beach BBQs. All in all this session has flown by in the blink of an eye, just like Calypso flies by all the other boats in the regatta. We have all grown so much and sailed so far. May this wonderful experience stay in our minds for the rest of the year until we can return to the beautiful BVI!

Day 16- Our Last Day On Calypso

Location: West End, Tortola
Author: Raquel G.
Today we woke up and had a breakfast of cereal and oatmeal. I went to a skippers meeting, where I was informed about the upcoming race. We then sailed to the starting line and counted down until the race began. We raised the mainsail and the jib, turned off the engine and sailed off. We watched as different boats passed each other and then reached a green marker where we tacked and all ran to sit on the high side of the boat. We didnt win, but we did come in 4th place, which isnt too bad! We then began a huge clean of the boat and made it almost spotless. We then arrived to West End where we arrived on the first day. We docked and then got ready for shore time. Later will end the night with our last beach BBQ and our final night in the BVI.

Day 15- Road Town

Location: The Bight, Norman Island
Author: Mayss H.
We started the day with a good breakfast and then sailed to Road Town, the BVIs capital. We had a good time exploring the city. Each one of us found something to do there; some of us got their hair braided while others enjoyed food from the local shops. We took a nap under the blue sky and woke up to one of our own staff members getting their sailing certifications! It made us really happy and reminded us that we are certified as well and just how far we have come. The music was playing while the chefs cooked a delicious meal and the rest of the crew danced. We ate while watching the pink sunset. We ended the day with an activity involving writing nice things to each other on cards. Were living this experience to the fullest and you will enjoy listening to all of our stories when we come home!!

Day 14- Best Dive Ever

Location: Great Harbor, Peter Island
Author: Cam K.
Today everyone woke up excited because today was the day of our coolest dive. Once everyone was up, we had breakfast, which was oatmeal and cereal. After that, we set sail for the wreck of the RMS Rhone. Once there we had to wait our turn to dive so we made a really cool boom swing off the boat. When we got to go dive the water was super clear and awesome. We all got our gear on and jumped in. Once we were all in we descended to 60ft and as we made our way underwater the wreck came into sight and it was probably the coolest thing all trip. We got to go through the boat and saw some really cool big fish. On the way back, we saw a barracuda that was giant and it scared everyone. Once back on our boat we had lunch with the other boat Sailing Curls and played on the boom swing again. Then we went for a really cool hike where we could look off the cliffs and see cool tide pools. After that, we had some down time when we sailed back to Peter Island. We made dinner when we got there, which was breakfast for dinner. Then we had a Lifeworks Forum with Mike. I could definitely saw this is one of my favorite days so far!

Day 13- Racing Day 1

Location: Great Harbor, Peter Island
Author: Marianne T.
I was woken up this morning by a gentle poking to silently set up Griffin’s surprise ActionQuest birthday party. The whole crew was seated around the cake and had their cards in hand. Smash woke Griffin up and told him there was a surprise waiting for him. We was delighted by our plan and told us all a huge thanks. After a sugary breakfast, we soon set sail and practiced sail circles. Many hours later, we finally caught a glimpse of the land that promised the return of our cell phones. West End was our original dock from the first day and houses many charming shops and people. We spent a couple of hours stocking up on junk food, buying souvenirs, contacting our parents, and most importantly, using the free Wi-Fi. When our shore time finished, Griffin and I attending the organization meeting for a sailboat race. It took us approximately two hours of hard work, the skills of everyone onboard and a healthy dose of sweat to come in second place. Although we might not have won, we have built the basis to a solid team for the final race. As we set anchor at the finish line, I can only incredulously stare at the remaining days of our voyage and hope the time we have left will be as incredible as what we have experienced until now.
