Salty Hair, I Don’t Care

Location: Sommer’s Beach, Tortola
Author: Haley N.
The day started with the funny and catchy morning CD. Bright and early on this wonderful day, we had some extra crispy eggs. We then moved along to Monkey Point and went diving. For me and the other Neptunes, it was our second Fish ID dive. My dive buddy Emma and I found some wonderful little fish. Some of the types we found included Yellowtail Damselfish, angelfish (like the one with the scar in Finding Nemo) and a magical butterflyfish. Then we hung out on Sommers Beach and went swimming! Tonight we had a beach BBQ and ended the day with a movie (Space Jam).

A Late Start

Location: Muskmelon Bay, Guana Island
Author: Chase H.
Today we were able to sleep in until 7:30 am because the staff members had a meeting. For breakfast we had amazing pancakes with Nutella and syrup. After we all had breakfast and the staff came back, we set sail to go to our first dive site of the day. The dive site we went to was called The Kraken and it is a new wreck. Everybody loved this dive site and thought it was a really cool experience exploring the sunken ship. After the dive, we all had lunch which was chicken salad. When we finished lunch clean up, we moved to our next destination. Once we got to Muskmelon Bay, we started to prepare food for dinner and get gear out for the night dive. For dinner we had chili and rice. A special guest, Mike the director of AQ, came over for dinner. This night dive was special because it was independently led by all the students. After the night dive, we ate cake and went to bed!

Smooth Sailing

Location: Marina Cay
Author: Maggie H.
Even though we’re a day over the halfway mark, things aren’t winding down. We’re doing more dives than ever, usually two a day and some we get to lead independently with our buddy, providing a great opportunity to show off our new navigation skills. After waking up and eating breakfast it was go, go, go. We set up our dive gear before sailing to Ginger Island for our second independent dive. The dive, as always, was incredible. The reef was teeming with different fish and corals. One of the highlights for me was seeing a trumpet fish. There were also some massive coral heads that had fish coming in and out of every nook and cranny. After our awesome dive, we headed to Trellis for a few hours while the boat was refueled and the water tanks were filled. Emma, Greta and I ate at a little outdoor spot with good chicken and refreshing salads. Some of the local cats joined us for a time, either looking to be our friends or take our chicken scraps. We also got ice cream and boat snacks to help hold us over during long sails to come. As I write this, the chefs are preparing another fabulous meal. Tonight’s special involves a salad and tortellini. After we eat, we will join the rest of ActionQuest for our third and final Lifeworks forum. It’s been another great day here in the beautiful BVIs. I look forward to another gorgeous sunset (I try to take a picture every night) and another great day tomorrow.

The Happiest Our

Location: Great Harbor, Peter Island
Author: Scarlett D.
After waking up to some amazing music, we started the morning with some delicious breakfast burritos. After clean up, we caught up on dive logs, notebooks and sleep while we moved to the other side of the bay. After mooring, the Dolphin divers from the other boats came to do a starfish dissection. It was super interesting!. We quickly set up for our dives and then splashed for our first research dive. The Dolphins got to do benthic surveys, which involve taking the percentage of various corals, sponges and algae within a quadrat. It was a really great learning experience and I loved getting to study the composition of the reef. After surfacing, we had grilled cheese for lunch and then set up for our second naturalist dive. It was hard to find the 3 types of symbioses that we were supposed to look for, but still a lot of fun. We finished the day off with a wonderful Thanksgiving in June and then a movie night (we watched Mean Girls). It was a great day!
