Day 20 Staff Update

Location: West End, Tortola
Author: Matt H.

We have come to the end of a great journey around the British Virgin Islands. We have sailed over 300 nautical miles, and have conducted over 300 dives over the last 21 days.

Our shipmates have excelled at both sailing and diving, developing new skills and certifications such as Night Diver, Wreck Diver, Boat Diver and PADI Advanced Open Water for our Neptunes.

Meanwhile the Dolphins have learned about Digital Underwater Photography, Night Diving and even completed a series of research dives and have conducted their own research projects. They have also been turtle tagging and conducted a series of marine dissections. However, most importantly, while all these awesome activities were going on, the crew of Second Wind have joined together as a team and a family.

Through our strange dance moves and eccentric noise making, we have grown closer as a boat, but also as a fun, dysfunctional family. Every dinner, dive and crazy sail have brought us closer and closer. Every single person on board has grown exponentially, as students, but also as people too.

Day 20 Last Day

Location: West End, Tortola

Today was our last full day of the trip. We started off the day with our final scuba dive in the Indians. It was so much fin and I saw a ton of cool things, like a huge stingray. Our day was then followed by arduous cleaning. We needed to get the boat in tip top shape for the next session! All of us worked extremely hard to clean up our mess, as we divided and conquered. Groups consisting of 4-5 people were assigned specific duties, such as deckying, cleaning the heads, cleaning the cabins and cleaning the saloon. After a few hours, we were finally done and had a well deserved lunch at West End. After spending the day at port, we got ready for our final BBQ dinner. This BBQ was probably the most enjoyable because you could tell that everyone was cherishing his or her last night with each other. Although the trip felt as if it began yesterday. I still believe I learned so much in such a short period of time, I will cherish all the memories and friends I’ve made at Action Quest forever!

Day 18 Wreck Alley

Location: Great Harbor, Peter Island
Author: Nick V.
With a late start and a relaxing sail, Second Wind and her crew made their way from GHP to Wreck Alley. After spending some time with Matt, Jess and Oscar in the power tower learning about sailing the boat around some “rocky obstacles” I was ready to begin our dives for the day. As the Dolphins dove off Second Wind to begin their explorations of Wreck Alley, the Neptunes set up their gear and made their way to Spindrfit II for our final wreck certification dives. As we dove in to see the Beta wreck for the first time, as well as practice tying out wreck lines around the outside of the wreck I couldn’t wait til the afternoon when we would actually get to explore the inside of the multi level boat, and finally finish our wreck certifications! Joining back with the Dolphins for lunch on Second Wind I could see they were just as excited for their dives. The Neptunes made their way back to Spindrift and with a Navy Seal back roll into the water we descended once more to the Beta wreck. Journeying through he wreck, although a bit dark and nerve wracking, was incredible and an experience I’ll never forget. Now sailing back to GHP I know that it has been a day that none of us will forget.
