Day 15: Cheeseburger In Paradise

Location: Gustavia, St. Barth
A very fun day started off at around 6:00. We were given the choice to either eat on shore or on the boat for our first day in St. Barths. We were all very impressed with the fancy stores and delicious food. After walking around for a few hours we headed back to the boat where we learned about the VHF on board or Very High Frequency radio. Then we had a lunch of chicken salad sandwiches, water and pink lemonade, and got ready for the beach. As we got settled in at the beach we saw a couple of people climbing some rocks and cliffs nearby. Lauren, Lexi and I decided to swim over to where they were jumping in the water. We met up with Theo and Will as we made our way to the rock. It was a little bit hard to climb the rocks toward the jumping point but there was an amazing view from the top. There was a seven meter rock, an eight meter rock and a ten meter rock. A few French kids that were about the same age as us and younger were also up on the rocks. After we gained the courage to take the jump it was amazing. We screamed the first few times we jumped, but it was completely worth it. Soon after, James showed up by himself because Aaron had stepped on a sea urchin back on the beach and was trying to get the spines out. We were astounded by the younger kids who were flipping and jumping off of the ten meter rock so Theo decided to try it. Later on, Lauren was the second to jump from the higher rock. As I began to climb up the ten meter rock, unsure about whether I was willing to jump or not, Gwen, Aaron and Robert showed up. Gwen jumped for the first time as I jumped from the ten meter rock. Theo was the only one who knew how to speak French so he set off with the French kids to find higher rocks to jump from and explore. Nick arrived at the cliff and we encouraged him to jump. After a while he enjoyed it so much that he would climb up and jump back down without talking to anyone. At one point it was time for him to jump from the ten meter cliff. He laid on the rock for a while to “make sure it was safe” before he stood up on it. Robert was finally able to jump for the first time as Nick jumped from the higher one. After many jumps we began to swim back to the beach so that we could return to the boat to shower and go to dinner. We had dinner at a restaurant called Le Select. This is the restaurant that Jimmy Buffet apparently wrote the song “Cheeseburger in Paradise” about. When we got back to the boat we relaxed and the advanced sailors worked on their passage planning. It has been an extremely fun day for everyone on Offline and I’m sure “Cheeseburger in Paradise” will be stuck in our heads by the time we get back home.
