It’s hard to believe that our trip together on Spindrift II is halfway there. We have dove and sailed our way half way around Tortola, working on certifications and research projects, all the while coming together as a team. Our Neptunes Alexa, Yumiko, Eunice, Kieran, Reece, Baline and Bret have finished their advanced open water certifications and have started learning how to plan and conduct independent dives. Out of the water Emma & Alexa are our boat DJs and dance parties, teaching everyone their moves (even the staff!). Yumiko started this session having never dove in open water before, and has impressed all of us with her natural hand at scuba diving. Eunice and Bret are two of our more experienced divers who keep the group on task in water and keep the group smiling with their subtle and funny asides out of the water. Robbie has taken to underwater photography & videography with great enthusiasm, always eager to bring his GoPro along on dives and get great new footage. Baline’s excitement and curiosity about the underwater world and all of its creatures is contagious, and his underwater jokes and dance moves always have us laughing, Kieran has excelled at planning and executing dives, always helping his buddies navigating (like sharks!) along the way. Reece has been an integral part of our crew both above and below the water, exhibiting dive skills well beyond his years and always jumping up to lend a hand when topside. In the meanwhile, our Dolphins Jen, Riley, Alissa and Adrienne have been busy learning about oceanography, Caribbean geology, and coral reefs. The Dolphins have done starfish dissections, fish and coral studies, and have recently embarked upon a self-lead and designed group research project on damsel fish behavior. Over the coming days they will be planning and conducting independent dives to gather data. When they’re not together as Team Science, our Dolphins are an integral part of our crew. Adrienne and Alissa are always on their feet and ready to help, even with things they’ve never done before. Jen’s goofiness and ever-present smile has kept the rest of us in high spirits. It has been a pleasure getting to know these 13 unique and wonderful individuals over the past week and a half, and I’m looking forward to what the next ten days will bring!
