Staff Update Day 20: Back Home in West End

It’s hard to believe that 20 days have gone by so quickly. Just three weeks ago the Mahi gang was all sitting around the cockpit table for the first time, eating tortellini and trying to learn one anothers names. In that time we’ve circumnavigated Tortola, dove some of the finest wrecks and reefs the BVIs have to offer and (in the case of the Rescues) learned how to take care of both ourselves and others on each and every dive.

The Mahi staff is so incredibly proud of all the hard work our crew has put in throughout the past several weeks. Alana, Lucy, Lydia, Alyssa, Joe and Sam finished out their rescue diver certifications after a perfectly-executed scenario yesterday morning. Caleb, Chris (aka Fluffy), Ryan, Nikolai and Giles recently completed not only their advanced open water certification but also their night, equipment and wreck specialties; they planned and executed a wreck penetration dive two days ago. The Mahi gang also boasts a number of competent sailors, all of whom stepped up to the plate and helped us get our sails in and our dinghies tended when we sailed into a squall yesterday afternoon.
It’s not the hard skills that makes this group of shipmates so memorable, however. Instead, we’ll remember Alana’s vocabulary contributions, Alyssa’s ever-ready helpful presence, Lucy’s bubbly enthusiasm, Lydia’s stories, Joe’s level-headed maturity, Caleb’s hammock engineering, Sam’s squeeze answers, Ryan’s jokes (and cheesy scrambled eggs), Giles’ quirky sense of humor, Fluffy’s non-stop banter and Nikolai’s smooth operations. Although this may seem like a platitude to those at home, believe us when we say that we have never had a group of shipmates who loved one another so much, nor a group who had so much fun with one another (and brought the fun to other boats wherever they went!). We have been impressed and inspired by the way this crew has come together as both a team and a family and will be very sorry to see them go.
Thanks for an amazing session, Mahi Mahi III — and remember: Mahi gang for life!
