ODYSSEUS: VOYAGE LOG

Days 1 - 7 | Days 8 - 14 | Days 15 - 21

The follow log is an example of our most recent voyage. These are the student logbook entries from the 2007 Odysseus voyage, which departed from Nice, France.

June 19 - Day 1
Location: All over
Skipper n/a
Activities Wake up, brush your teeth and put your toothbrush in your bag. Time to get on an overnight flight to France!

June 20 - Day 2
Location: Villefranche-sur-mer
Skipper Chantale
Activities After a long overnight flight from the US, shipmates arrived in Nice today and made their way to the nearby town of Villefranche-sur-mer in minibuses.  The first ones to arrive had a quick lunch and headed back into the historical town for a scavenger hunt that took them all around town and came back on board at the end of the afternoon just in time for showers.  Almost all the crew had arrived for dinner and after a filling lasagna everyone started learning the day to day operations on Argo.  We're looking forward to raising anchor and getting underway tomorrow morning!

AQ Argo update:  Amanda calls in the crew's first podcast covering the highlights of the day and lets us know they are off to St. Topez in the morning.

June 21 - Day 3
Location: Cannes
Skipper Olivia
Activities We woke up early this morning to an excellent breakfast of french toast. We then motored Argo from Villefranche south to Cannes where we had lunch and went ashore. We then had the opportunity to go into Cannes and explore the town. We walked along the promenade, stopping to get ice cream in a cafe and into some shops where everything was far too expensive to buy. When we got back to the boat the wind and waves had picked up so we jumped off the boat to go swimming and shower. In the afternoon the last member of our crew, Teddy, finally arrived and made Argo complete. Then the waves got very big so we moved the boat over to La Napoule where we spent the night. It was a great day and everyone was tired at the end. We still stood a night watch all through the night so that Argo was safe at her anchor.

AQ Argo Update:
Teddy and crew started the day with a fire drill! It was a great way to get started for a day tha included the first real chance to shake out the sails on the short trip over to St. Topez. Happy Birthday Liam!

June 22 - Day 4

Location: St. Tropez Harbour
Skipper Dillon
Activities We were woken up this morning by a fire drill so we all had to muster in the cockpit with our orange life preservers on. It took us over 7 minutes so hopefully we will get better at it next time. On today's journey from Cannes to the beautiful St.Tropez the crew experienced our first real sailing. With the guidance of the experienced officers, the Argo crew was able to tack and jibe like a veteran boat. Later in the day, the crew chowed down on some delicious chicken sandwiches and prepared to explore the port city of St. Tropez. Here they found nutella ice-cream, good French food and traditional architecture; a cultural thrill and fun to explore. The day ended with cake and fun as we celebrated Liam's birthday.

AQ Argo Update: Argo checks in and details a change up in the schedule that will see the crew heading to Italy on an overnight sail that should see the crew into La Spezia by day break! Look for details of the sail in the next update!

June 23 - Day 5

Location: Porto Venere, Cinque Terre
Skipper Oliver and Alex
Activities After a slow and lethargic start, Argo's crew battled some chilly breezes to eat a quick breakfast on deck with cabin cleaning followed. At 0900 we went to class and learned the third IYT sailing module. Unfortunately we were unable to sail as high winds and cloudy skies plagued the area. After lunch we decided to climb to fort La Polesta Rocco. About a 3 mile hike led us up ancient staircases and smoothed over rocks, to a view that literally took our breath away from the sheer height of the drop before us. After our hike down, we sat in town and had a refreshing rest while looking up out over our conquered turf.

June 24
- Day 6
Location: Ligurian Sea
Skipper Aaron and Louise
Activities THIS IS A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:

Port six man cabin clear your cabin and turn your lights off! Foc's'le, move the alligator! And please remember to close the watertight doors and leave the heads on dry bowl. Seeing as we have been sailing all day leave everything 40/40.And don't play rap in the salon at 1:30 in the morning. Thank you

Jim, can we play chicken with the cruise ship please?

AQ Argo Update: Sam checks in with the news for Day 7's activities. The crew arrived in Italy after a 29 hour passage and made great use of the day. Showers were followed by shore side exploration then dinner aboard and the Lifeworks Forum evening activity.

June 25 - Day 7
Location: Cinqueterre, Italy
Skipper:
Nina
Activities Weather was amazing, very sunny and hot...perfect weather for a cold gelato in Puerto Venere. The ocean was really calm and everyone seemed to be enjoying nice salt water showers. Between the small jewelry shops and soccer games on dirt fields everyone had a great time on shore. Back on the boat everyone relaxed and swam until diner, after cleaning we joined Jim for lifeworks in the cockpit and enjoyed the rest of the night.

AQ Argo Update: Alex and Oliver fill us in on the continued adventures of the crew of Argo out in Portovenere, Italy.
