DOLPHIN: VOYAGE LOG

Days 1 - 7 | Days 8 - 14 | Days 15 - 21

July 7 - Day 1
Location: West End, Tortola
Skipper n/a
Activities Shipmates arrive, get settled, call home, pick a bunk, and get ready to sail off tomorrow.

July 8 - Day 2
Location: South Bay, Peter Island
Skipper Marina
Activities At about 5 am, it started pouring and everyone sleeping out on deck had to come inside. We were warned about this. Today we left West End and went to White Bay, Peter Island. Getting to drive the boat was really cool, and it took a while to get used to. But it became easy. We tacked about 4 times and when we got to Peter Island, we ate lunch. Then we had our first dive to check our skills. For dinner, we had sloppy joes. For dessert, Carlos made a really good apple dessert. Then we met with all the boats to talk about each individual course, Neptune, Barracuda, Dolphin, and Rescue. I can't wait for tomorrow to come and neither can anyone else.

July 9 - Day 3

Location: Savannah Bay, Virgin Gorda
Skipper Keith
Activities Today we woke up at 6:30 and got breakfast ready. Standard cereal, however, it was quite good. We then headed out of White Bay and sailed to our first real dive site. Some kids split up to see a wreck and others saw the reef. It felt good to see everyone enjoying themselves underwater. Then we hit the sails again to Virgin Gorda. The crew did many tacks and displayed good knowledge of sailing. We traveled 25 nautical miles in total, which made for a sailing-packed day. To finish off, we skied and wake boarded while learning to drive the dinghy before a great pasta dinner. We have our first Lifeworks Forum tonight with Mike.

July 10 - Day 4

Location: Savannah Bay, Virgin Gorda
Skipper Andrew
Activities Today was quite eventful, even though we did not sail anywhere! The advanced divers had their first lecture, which was mainly focused on underwater navigation. After the infamous trip to the beach to test out their compasses, they made their way to the Sand Circles to perform one of the navigation dives. The Marine Bio divers started the day with an intro lecture which introduced imagine that, the course! Following that, they went on a basic observation dive to ID fish. Later that afternoon, they went on the windward/leeward hike which was so neat. I loved to see the difference of the leeward and windward sides. It was weird to be on land. The rest of the day was spent either chillin' out or enjoying the various water sports. To put it simply, it was a great day to enjoy the surroundings!!

Directors Update

ActionQuest Director Mike Meighan calls in with an update on the happenings on the advanced SCUBA diving side of the ActionQuest BVI fleet. The 46ft catamarans Bulot, Rafaella, Petoncle (Tonka) and Alexandra are hosting the students who are working on their PADI Advanced, PADI Rescue Diver and ActionQuest Tropical Marine Biology courses.

July 11 - Day 5
Location: Mountain Point, Virgin Gorda
Skipper Alexandra
Activities Today was busy and a ton of fun. We were up early to head to the famous and amazing Baths. We all had so much fun running around here and exploring. I felt like I was living in the blue lagoon. From here, we went to Spanish Town and were able to call home, get ice cream, and if you wanted to you could eat lunch on shore. It got really hot, so I was ready to leave. Then we had a great sail over to Mt. Point. Our boat was the fastest and it was a very fun sail. Once we got on the mooring ball, we went on a great snorkel for our night dive, where we saw some cool caves. Then we had dinner and our first night dive, which was amazing!

July 12 - Day 6

Location: Mountain Point, Virgin Gorda
Skipper Bri
Activities Today was an awesome day! We woke up and had breakfast while motoring over to the Dogs and went on our first dive of the day. It was pouring rain but we still had an awesome time. We dived through the Chimneys which were kind of like caves. We got to hold a starfish and there were no jelly fish. Yay! On the second dive, we went to the Coral Gardens, this dive was beautiful and we saw a plane wreck. We then had some time to chill while heading back over to GHP. We had our Underwater Naturalist lecture where we learned a lot and then had dinner and a Lifeworks Forum.

July 13 - Day 7
Location: Vixen Point, Virgin Gorda
Skipper Graham
Activities We did our underwater naturalist dive this morning at Mt. Point, which means that in a few days we will have our advanced certification. Then we headed over for a brief visit to Leverick Bay. The Marine Bio group was able to go on a really neat mangrove snorkel. We had the dance / BBQ in the evening which was a lot of fun. During the underwater naturalist dive, I saw a ton of awesome fish and it was a really great dive. I hope we do more dives this awesome; I am having the time of my life!!!
