Winding Down

Location: West End, Tortola
Author: Blake R.
The last full day has finally approached us. After twenty days of beautiful sailing and diving it is time to wind down and clean. After an early morning wake-up and skipper’s race chat, we lined up side by side for one final race. Unfortunately we ended up in last place, however it was a nice last sail with little rain. After sailing to the dock it was cleanup time and then to scrub everything. After these few hours of cleaning and heat we will have a few hours in West End, then a final BBQ. I’m sure it’s going to be a long night of goodbyes.

Staff Update Day 20

Location: West End, Tortola
Author: Doug
We cannot believe the trip has already come to an end! It has been a phenomenal three weeks, full of so many amazing dives, new experiences, and memories that we will all treasure. We are finishing the trip with three new open water divers, Alison, Charlotte, and Rodrigo. Jon and Brennan both finished their advanced open water course. The seven divemaster candidates have now completed all the requirements to become a diving professional. The Vegas and Carinas have also finished their sail training, and are all very competent sailors after three weeks at the helm. We will all miss being on Southern Accent together. Everyone heads back home with a hand full of note cards and a new group of great friends.

Final Day In The Water

Location: The Bight, Norman Island
Author: Eli K.
Today was our last day out on the water, as well as the wrap up of the divemaster course. At 6am, the DMs were in the water for the last 800 yard snorkel. Next, a few of us skied in Great Harbor. We then proceeded to head over to Road Town to get our fill of greasy cheeseburgers and junk food. After full stomachs we went on our last sail to the Bight, where we ate dinner and closed our program with the final card writing.

The Day of the RMS Rhone

Location: Great Harbor, Peter Island
Author: Samuel G.
Today we trekked to the famous BVI dive spot, the RMS Rhone. While it was the second or third time for the divemasters, it still proved to be an amazing spot, especially for the Vegas who dove the Rhone for the first time. For the divemasters, today was an important day. We led the advanced divers and the open waters through a dive, which is part of our training. Also, later tonight we will see if our hard work pays off, for we are taking our divemaster test. As divemasters, we spent the day leading divers through the Rhone and some last minute studying. The Vegas and Carinas enjoyed another relaxing day. Their days were full of the Rhone dive, the hike on Salt Island, and their boating exams. All in all, today was a very productive day. It is hard to believe that there are so few days left. However, that means that we will go through these last days cramming all the experiences and fun that we can possibly fit within us.

Pirates of the Caribbean

Location: Great Harbor, Peter Island
Author: Catie C.
After a morning of sailing circles and the practical sailing portion of the exam for the Vegas, we returned to our original starting point- West End. Despite a brief rain shower, we enjoyed West End’s Pusser’s restaurant, clothing stores, dive shops, and docks. Once we reloaded on water and food we prepped ourselves for a very intense afternoon of racing all the sail side boats to Great Harbor, Peter Island. We set our sails, flew our pirate flag, and sailed on with the pirates soundtrack setting our course. Although our boat came in last, we looked the best in our rain gear, bandanas, and snorkel gear on! Nonetheless we arrived at Great Harbor in time for a fantastic Mexican meal with Doug’s homemade guacamole, which was not only very good, but the perfect start to celebrating Doug’s birthday!
