BVI: Session 1 - Squeaky Brat

Night Dive!

Location: Mountain Point, Virgin Gorda
Author: Lara A.
The day started at 7 a.m. We woke up to some country music and a clear sky. Around 7:20, we had burritos for breakfast, cleaned up then had a sail chat. During the sail chat, we learned about navigation and the different ways you can find your way around the oceans. After that, we did some basic knot-tying skills and dinghy driving. The hardest knot to tie was the bowline knot. But I got the hang of it and taught two others how to do it. At 11:30 we had a white bean Tuscan soup for lunch to fill our stomachs before our mid-day dive. We did an abiotic identification drill where are we had to find five vertebrates four invertebrates and two plants. One of the vertebrates we found was called a southern stingray. Before the sunset, we took a saltwater shower and made dinner. For dinner, we ate Caesar salad and risotto. For that delicious meal, we had a guest come over. It was Mike. We had so much fun and had different conversations. Once dinner ended, we did an activity to get to know each other better. It consisted of many black and white pictures. We each had to pick three cards. One of them symbolizes a good trait you have, one that symbolizes a bad trait you want to get rid of and the final one should represent friendship. To end the day we did a night dive! My buddy Rachel and I saw a squid, eel and a huge tarpon. Sadly, five minutes into the dive, I got scratched by a fire coral but I was okay. I really enjoyed today and can’t wait for another day tomorrow.

Day 8

Location: Mountain Point, Virgin Gorda
Author: Celeste A.
Day 8 started with breakfast and our usual Ed Sheeran filled playlist. We were already rafted at a beach on Virgin Gorda. We did what is called a rotation day; which is where the boats take turns participation in a range of activities. Our boat, Squeakybrat, started by sailing miniature sailboats called Picos! I shared my Pico with Bella and after capsizing 3 times and almost running into an 80ft catamaran, we completed the race course with competence. After mastering the Picos we moved on to a 19 foot sailboat to practice our tacking and jibing. We switched off helming, working the jib sheet, and the main sheet. Our final activity was snorkeling along mangroves where we saw string rays, barracuda and huge schools of baby fish. Lara; our chef of the day put out sandwich supplies for a quick lunch. Then we were on the move. We arrived at a small port after a brief 10-minute motor. Shipmates were allowed to roam the local grocery store and gift shops and call their families for an hour. We anchored off shore for the night and all pitched in to make dinner (which was Mexican food)! After dinner, we had a scuba chat where we learned about scuba equipment and depths limits. We ended our day with squeeze (where we all hold hands and the skipper of the day asks a question and everyone answers).

Today we woke up at 7:00am and were about the last boat to wake up out of all the boats on B-side and A side, which are the two fleets of sailboats. After we put our
bedding away in our cabins we had a quick breakfast of cereal. We then gathered in the cockpit after breakfast cleanup where we found out what activities we would be doing today. We then took our dinghy to the beach to go windsurfing which went pretty well except for the fact that we fell over more times than we could count because it is so hard to balance. After we were done with that, we headed back to our boat to be picked up by super dinghies to go wakeboarding and kneeboarding. That was great because the water was super clear and smooth. Once everybody had gone, the super dinghies dropped us off at our boat lunch, which was mac and cheese, a huge favorite. After that, we had scuba chat about dive tables. It was very hard but we all did fine in the end. After the scuba chat, we got ready for the barbecue. The dinghies soon arrived and took us to the beach. When we got there, we saw that there was a nice beach and hamburgers o the grill. The whole barbecue lasted about 2 and a half hours and it was really fun because I got to see my sister and dance on the beach. Overall, it was a great day and night!

Day at The Beach

Location: Vixen Point, Gorda Sound
This morning we woke up at 7:00am and had delicious French toast for breakfast. After clean up, we set off to Anegada for a fun day on the island. On the island, we dug holes, built sand castles and had a picnic on the beach. Later that day after the beach, we sailed to the other side of Virgin Gorda. On the sail back, we were reading, singing and learning how to sail. When we got to the other side of the island, we rafted all of our boats together and got ready to make and eat veggie burgers. After dinner, we did squeeze. Today’s squeeze consisted of two questions: Bella’s was, what is your favorite NFL team? My question was, what do you miss most from home? And you had to pick 3 things. Then we had a scuba chat!
