BVI: Session 1 - Calypso

Day 16- Fun In The Sun

Location: Sidney’s, Jost van Dyke
Author: Max D.
Today we woke up at Sydneys Peace and Love on Jost van Dyke. We started this great day with some wonderfully made French toast. We got a quick briefing from Griffin then set sail on our day on Calypso. Today would be on water practical for sailing. Everyone helmed and finished the skills left to do. We learned how to heave to, that is when you back wind jib and turn the wheel to the same side of the jib. After a morning of sailing we headed to Green Cay. Once we got there we learned parts of the boat and played a game to learn the parts. We went to the beach and chilled. We have beans and rice then had a Lifeworks Forum.

Day 15- Longest Day Ever

Location: Sidney’s, Jost van Dyke
Author: Nathan F.
Today I was the very last one up (as usual) and had to be shaken awake by Griffin. We all had cereal for breakfast and got off quick since we had to go on the hike up to the top of Mt. Sage so early. Right after that we took dinghies to the dock with our shoes, unfortunately today was the day that I would get my stitches out, so I was one of 3 that would, instead of hiking go to the hospital. We had to take a taxi (along with Mike who had a meeting) to Road Town and interestingly enough, the drive shared the majority of its route with the hike, so I got to watch as I easily passed everyone that had been hiking for a half hour. I would figure out later that Fernando got to the top 7th and Will came in 19th. I got my stitches out at the clinic. Mike’s meeting was still going on so we went to a cafe and had cappuccinos and smoothies. After that we met back up with the group, had lunch on shore, and walked around for a little while. We then went to a small island and built a bunch of awesome sandcastle, ours was a whale. Finally we had a barbecue with an awesome DJ on Jost Van Dyke!

Day 14 – Certifications And Rotations

Location: Cane Garden Bay, Tortola
Author: Arden F.
At 6:30 am, Calypso crew woke up to the morning playlist. By 7:00 we had our PFDs on and were ready to sail to Muskmelon Bay on Guana Island. We arrived at our destination and ate oatmeal for breakfast. Then, we started our first rotation of the day by learning how to read and use charts. Next, we all hopped on to a dinghy to go scuba diving! This scuba dive was very important one because it was the last dive we needed to do to get our certification! The dive was around 42ft and we saw stingrays, fish, a puffer fish and sand dollars! This was a bittersweet dive because even though we got our certifications, it meant that we only had one more dive after it. Once we finished it, we headed back to the boat to make Turk’s Heads. They are bracelets or anklets made out of one long piece of string. After making those we ate a much-needed lunch consisting of deli sandwiches. Then, we had a scuba chat where we reviewed dive tables. Dive tables tell you how far you can dive for a period of time without getting sick. After reviewing these we had to take a 10-question exam about them. While we were taking the exam, our skipper, Griffin, was sailing us to Cane Garden Bay. Once we finished our exam and arrived at our destination, we prepared for a very tasty dinner: Thai peanut chicken. After dinner, we cleaned up and are getting ready for a sail chat. As a rewarded for our scuba certifications and finishing dive tables, we will be baking brownies. Today was a long but eventful rotation day and brownies! Freshwater showers are a great way to end it.

Day 13- Lucky Day 13

Location: Sommer’s Beach, Tortola
Author: Will H.
On the wonderful day of June 27th, the shipmates all woke up at 6:30 sharp. We sluggishly made scrambled eggs for breakfast. After breakfast we watched seven short videos about plastics and the ocean. They taught us about the importance of littering. Then we went on another open water dive and saw a huge hermit crab hiding in an algae covered conch shell. We came back to our boat Calypso from the dive boat Surprise and ate some tasty vegetable soup. After lunch we went wakeboarding and knee boarding. We even did tricks, like 360s! After that, we chilled on Calypso and swam. Emma looked for Sophie’s GoPro on scuba. She was lucky to find it! We ended the fun filled day with a really cool BBQ.
