Staff Update Day 20

Location: West End
Author: Catie
In just the blink of an eye we have sailed around the British Virgin Islands and have docked back in West End. It’s been an incredible journey, since Day 1 to race day today. Violet and Matt shared the helm over the duration of our sail like champions. While we may not have won the race, with Chris, Charlie and Ethan at the jib sheets, we were able to gain speed and show off our sailing skills. It has been remarkable how far all the shipmates have developed their sailing skills and many are now ICC certified crew members. Looking back on all the travels Jon and Chris and Jane all raved about turtle tagging and their rewarding community service through Quest. Besides the community service, the Questers along with our Vegas, have conquered the world of watersports. Grant is practically a fish scuba diving and Abby and Izzy have really furthered their kneeboarding and water skiing skills. As we return to our original home dock, Jack has reminded us how it looks different this time. When we left our our adventure, our crew left the dock as a group of eager shipmates and we have returned as a team of divers, volunteers, friends and sailors. It’s been an amazing three weeks on the water. As crew of Astrid, we will surely miss the Astridians and wish them safe travels!

Day 20- Last Day

Location: West End
Author: Violet M.
We started the day with a light sprinkling of rain, which was a perfect way to wake up. After eating the last of the oatmeal and cereal, Astrid was ready to begin the day. Jack and I attended a skipper’s meeting on Pelican Pat, where we studied the chart. After a short debate over the length of the last race it was decided we would go past Road Town and finish at Peter Island. We started the race farthest downwind, however we were not disheartened by this disadvantage. Beginning the race in last place still never fazed us, we always remained positive. There was little wind but the race managed to remain an active one. Tactically overtaking Laurasia towards the end of the race boosted us to 8th place, which raised our spirits massively. We’ve started to clean and we won’t stop until the boat is spotless. We are all excited to end the day with the final BBQ.

Day 18- RMS Rhone Day

Location: Great Harbor, Peter Island
Author: Ethan S.
Early this morning we awoke to a heavy but brief rain shower. After our chefs, Zack and Chris B. were awake and dripping, they prepared pancakes. We then traveled to the wreck of the RMS Rhone, a ship which went down in a hurricane in 1867, to dive. Vega shipmates dove down and saw the stern of the ship, while those on Quest snorkeled around the area. After lunch we began our hike on the beach. We hiked to the top of a tall hill to the windward side of the island. The visibility at the top of the hill allowed us to see for miles, despite the passing rain. After the hike ended we returned to the boat and prepared to surprise Gordo for his birthday tonight!

Day 17

Location: Great Harbor, Peter Island
Author: Abby W.
Today was the first race day. There were two races, one was before lunch and the other race was after lunch. The first race was to West End, where we first started out the trip. Astrid came in fifth place. I was so much fun. After that all the boats were docked at port. We got to walk around and have lunch. Tonight for dinner we are having Mexican, then sail side B has a Lifeworks meeting, which will be good. Overall today was amazing!
