BVI: Session 2 - La Bella Vita

Bella Vita Staff Update Day 21

Location: West End, Tortola
Author: Shona, Andy, and Ben
Shona, Ben and Andy and the crew of Le Bella Vita are finishing session 2 full of adventure and new friendships. We’ve had quite the journey bringing our home and newly formed family around the beautiful island here getting certified in basic and advanced sailing, VHF radio, advanced diving, boat diving, coral reef conservation, and fish ID. It’s been a jam packed schedule full of learning how to live together laugh together and grow together. As we finish up here I think we would all agree that we walk away with 14 new friends. Ross has kept the boat entertained with his quick humor and awesome music choices all while gaining a strong knowledge of sailing. Trevor came to AQ with a lot of experience in sailing and he continued to grow on the bigger boats whilst guiding the other shipmates and taking the helm as much as he could, Jules is a big presence in both statue and personally brought the group together with his family orientated mindset. Colin is a returner to AQ and he definitely jumped straight back into it, he came as an advanced diver already so he spent his time leading his own dives with Ashley, another advanced diver, exploring the dive sites we have here, They both became stronger sailors too, learning how to navigate using the compass heading and also leading a crew on board in man over boards drills and sailing circles.Thomas grew and grew and became a confident sailor throughout our 3 weeks here. He was liked by everyone onboard and has really shown by how much people look to him for the group. Lucas was our Spanish companion! He brought the Spanish flavor in his cooking and excitement for life, especially in his skills in the water mastering wakeboarding and waterskiing. Nathaniel always gave 100 percent in everything he did on board and he truly shined on race day when he took the helm for the 2-hour race up the Drake channel to bring a La Bella Vita victory. Quincey has so much energy for life and is a natural on the water, becoming an advanced sailor and an advanced diver all while bringing a fun and friendly atmosphere on board. Nicole is another advanced diver, but she added certifications in boat diver and fish ID and also gained knowledge in sailing where she really started to shine. Our true representative from Canada! Bella and Phoebe came as best friends and bring such a fun and warm energy to life on board. They have big bubbly characters and together brought the crew home as a family while gaining a lot of certifications on offer. I think we can all sit back, breathe and reflect on a beautiful journey. We’re sad to see our family go but we’re all happy that we came together to share these beautiful moments. We hope to see you all next year. date: Jul 28, 2017

Back To Where It All Started

Today we woke up to the morning CD for the second to last time. After breakfast, I went to the skipper’s meeting with Shona to prepare for our last race. We went back to the boat and got ready. Lining up all of the boats up between Pelican Island and Water Point, we started off the race in the worst place but soon passed everyone except for Aeolus. After tailing them the whole race, we were almost at the finish line between a yellow buoy and Fisher Point. Aeolus finished, but they crossed the wrong side of the buoy so once we crossed the line we finished in first when the race was over we brought all the food on deck but ended up throwing more overboard than what we actually ate. We ate eggs for lunch and then started a long and very hot clean up. After cleaning every inch of the boat we made it back to West End and had some free time on the dock. Sadly we have the last BBQ tonight but we are all excited to see our friends and family! date: Jul 27, 2017

The Rhone

Location: The Bight, Norman Island

Today was both an amazing and sad day. We woke and had a relaxing sail to Salt Island. Then we took our sailing test. Then we hiked Salt Island, which is probably one of my favorite views of the trip. My favorite part of the day was definitely diving the Rhone. I was happy to see amazing sea life and a beautiful reef. We saw 2 huge stingrays, one shark, and other really cool fish. The day ended with a relaxing sail with country music. Tonight we have to write our cards because it’s our last night all together, I am so sad to be leaving my new friends and this beautiful place but I had an amazing time. date: Jul 26, 2017

#Accomplished

Location: Great Harbor, Peter Island

This morning we were allowed to sleep into the generous time of 7:30, so late! Then we ate some delicious pancakes which were slathered in Nutella. Nutella has become a very hot commodity here. My jar is hidden behind the bread in the galley. After breakfast, we went wakeboarding/skiing/knee boarding. I decided to try and ride the kneeboard like a boogie board and go super-fast. It ended in a huge wipe out giving me a nice salt blast to the face. After that adventure, we set sail for Road Town. I was at the helm and managed to get us there with the help of many others (not the staff) without hitting anything. After some shore time, we headed back and Trevor got us here safely. As a boat, we can sail without staff #accomplished. date: Jul 25, 2017
