Day 20- Last Day

Location: West End, Tortola
Author: Aaron D.
Today is the last day at ActionQuest and when we woke up this morning, you could feel the melancholy in the room. Fortunately everyone snapped out of it fairly soon as we set to work getting race day prepped. A team effort moved all the tanks to the back of the boat to help us hit the high speeds. Simon and I attended the skipper’s meeting to learn the route of the race. Throughout chants, we could be heard by all, in the area. At 9am, exactly the countdown finished and we got off to a flying start. Cruising at 8.5 knots, we were leaving other boats in our wake. We finished a good 4th place in a race of nine. Next came boat appreciation, and with Casey in charge, the boat has never looked cleaner. We pulled into West End for the last time. At the time, I’m writing this here waiting to go on shore and enjoy what West End has for lunch. I’m sure the BBQ will be emotional tonight as everyone says his or her farewells, but overall this trip has been awesome.

Day 18 – Shipwreck Divin!

Location: Great Harbor, Peter Island
Author: Josh H.
Today started off with an early morning motor from Great Harbor on Peter Island to the dive site of the sunken RMS Rhone. I, along with the other Vegas, were all especially excited to dive since it would be our first dive as certified open water divers. The RMS Rhone sunk in 1867. Also, DMs Maddy and Brandon led our two groups on the dive. During the dive, we saw many fish, coral varieties and two sea turtles. Madeline also pointed out an octopus and an eel chilling under a rock to the rest of us. Next the four DMs continued leading other groups on the dives and the rest of us went to Lady A to all take and pass our crew certification theory exams. After enjoying a long awaited lunch of ramen noodles, we dinghied to nearby Salt Island where we saw some salt ponds. Then we walked up to the peak of the island and were met with amazing 360 views of the surrounding water and islands. Later we rejoined with the rest of our crew at our home bot and had fun with the boom swing and shower time. Coming up today still is breakfast for dinner and a movie night.

Day 17

Location: Great Harbor, Peter Island

Hi! Today started with a breakfast for champions, oatmeal. I was then sent over to the meeting for skippers, where I learned what an exciting race we had ahead of us. The team then gathered on the bow of the boat in various forms of colorful outfits and chanted our famous cheer. A few worth mentioning would be Brandon’s tie-dye dress and fanny pack, as well as Aaron’s amazing crop top. The race started slow, but working as a team, we immediately recovered all the way to third place! The race ended where the whole adventure started; West End, Tortola. We grabbed lunch at Pusser’s, shopped around for a bit, and even reconnected with the world on our phones for a few hours. We then met for one more skipper’s meeting before heading off for an even more action packed race. Our boat worked as a team and improved on each tack we did. Madeline did an awesome job on the helm, and we ended the race in second place of 7 boats! Woo! We noticed the trend of improving each race and are striving for first place next race. We then set up our anchor in a beautiful bay known as Great Harbor. We had an awesome Mexican dinner before our divemasters Brandon, Aaron, Hannah, and Maddy went on a night dive. Today showed us all what we were capable of while sailing and working as a team, and I can’t wait to see what the next race day holds for us.
