Staff Update Day 21

Location: West End, Tortola
Author: Lisa
Wow! Three weeks have flown by so fast! We are no longer the strangers that arrived here from different parts of the world, nervous about what our adventure would bring. We are different not just because of the blonde in our hair or the sun-kissed glow of our skin, but because we have accomplished something together. Zourite is here again in West End having circumnavigated Tortola and visiting many beautiful islands. All of the Vegas completed their PADI Open Water certifications as well as their IYT Basic Crew. The DM candidates have all completed their required skills successfully and are the newest PADI professional members!!! Besides the hard skills, we learned to help each other and act as a team. Parents, thank you for sharing these amazing 12 individuals with us — Zourite will miss them!

Day 20- Last Sail

Location: West End, Tortola
Author: Jo S.
The shipmates of Zourite were up early for their last meal on board their home of the last three weeks. This was quickly followed by a skipper’s meeting, every skipper coming together to discuss the details for the very last race. This included leaving the Bight on a starboard tack, tacking around a greet buoy midway and finishing the last stretch on a port tack into Road Town. Zourite was off to a good start and was neck and neck with Sambamba however they slowly got further and further ahead and Zourite struggled to keep up. It was a good race and Sambamba won, with Zourite coming in second. It was a slow sail back to West End, which gave us an opportunity to return the boat to the way we found it and pack the last of our things. At West End we were able to have some lunch and free time before our final BBQ, which was when we got to see our friends from other boats. Overall today was a perfect way to end our trip. I’m left with the conclusion that ‘Zourite is Alright’ is definitely an understatement and that is down to the people on the boat, especially Jake and Lisa. Without them the trip wouldn’t have been so enjoyable. I will miss everyone on Zourite, however I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to meet them and know we will stay in touch and keep our memories of this trip forever.

Day 19

Location: The Bight, Norman Island
Author: John M.
Today was a great day. We started today off with a late wake up, 8-ish has never felt so wonderful to wake up until now! On top of this we had some great pancakes for breakfast, some plain and some with cinnamon apple and some with bacon cooked in them. Talk about a treat! Instead of going to Road Town, Zourite being the amazing boat we are, got to spent the day in Great Harbor to have some time for the divemaster candidates to do some watersports and finish any missing skills. It was also nice to spend time doing watersports with our shipmates who are participating in the Vega program since the DMs are usually pretty busy on rotation days. Oh and, if you didn’t think the day sounds fun enough already we got a surprise visit by a bottle-nose dolphin. It was only there for a minute but pretty much everybody grabbed fins and a mask and flung themselves in the water, including Lisa, one of our staff members. We also did a bit of swimming and jumping off the side of the boat by making a swing with the boom. Not really sure how it was set up since I was doing something else at the time, but man was it awesome. As for the few skills the DMs had left to do, they knocked them out of the park, even the stress test. But in all seriousness I think all the DMs made an effort today since it’s our last day of diving at AQ and possibly the last time most of us will dive in a while with college coming up. But until then we’ll all make the most out of the time we have left. One more race to go and even though we had a really close call to coming second last time, we get even more competitive. But Zourite is a good, fast boat and I think everyone wants to win three in a row so wish us luck!
