BVI: Session 2 - Happy Our

Day 21- Staff Update

Location: Cat, Lauren, and Justin
Author: West End, Tortola
We were so sad to see our shipmates off today on the ferry dock here in West End. We can’t stop reminiscing on the past three weeks that we all shared together. It’s hard to believe that just three weeks ago, most of our shipmates were strangers and were actually quiet! Now, they have all grown so much together and have worked well as one cohesive unit. Ben worked hard from the beginning to help everyone bond and feel comfortable with each other. Kyle and Julien (better known as Merm) immediately became best friends and our ice cream sandwich float doesn’t look the same without the two of them floating on it behind the boat. They both, along with Lauren, conducted and presented an impressive project on parrotfish abundance and behavior and successfully completed the Dolphin program with flying colors. Jenna overcame fears of steering the boat and became a powerful helmsman. Megan taught everyone how to longline the dinghys and was always excited to help out with all aspects of running the boat. John and James carried the energy and passion of Go Beyond with them on this voyage and reminded us to appreciate the little things and give back to the local communities of this amazing place that we all called home for these three weeks. Jaqi made us laugh with her goofy quips and was always willing to step up and help out. Molly inspired us to take a chance on what was one of our greatest collective feats of creating the most epic burger of all time. Stella brought the group together with her games and bubbly personality. Both of them proved to be incredible wreck divers as well. Genevieve somehow managed to always cheer people up and keep a smile stretched across her face no matter the circumstances. Biz overcame her fear of scuba diving on this trip and became an incredible advanced open water scuba diver. We will never forget the memories that we all made as the unforgettable and victorious crew of Happy Our who despite all of the odds came together to win the 2017 dive side sail race by not just a small amount but by miles!

Bleach, Bleach, Bleach

Location: Julien M.
Author: West End, Tortola
Early this morning as we finished writing our cards to shipmates and staff, we planned to prank Luna Kahuna and hike Treasure Island. At 2 am, as everyone drifted to sleep, we set alarms for 4 am. When we woke up at 7:30 am, we realized our plans were failed so we got up rather slowly and ate breakfast. We then went for our final dive at the Indians. The Indians was a shallow but beautiful reef full of bright corals and fish. As we motored to West End, we cleaned the entire boat to prepare to leave BVI tomorrow. Now we are getting ready to go to shore and eat lunch. Later we will probably stay up all night talking and laughing. These past three weeks have been some of the best of my life; diving, sailing, hiking, water skiing, and bonding with new friends. Although I am excited to get home and spend time with my friends and family, I am so sad to leave behind the BVIs, AQ, and all the new friends I made this session.

Race Day!

Location: Jenna N.
Author: The Bight, Norman Island
We started our day off right with a breakfast consisting of delicious pancakes. Then we all chose our own adventure, we had the choice between a moonwalk dive, a dive on the Fearless wreck, water sports, or free time. After we all regrouped, we motored over to Road Town where we had about two hours on shore. Once we got back to our boat it was time for our race with the other dive side boats. We won! Our night started by cooking dinner, showers, packing, and chilling. After a great squeeze, we are ending the night and closing our trip by writing cards to our shipmates.

Wreck Alley!

Location: Molly R.
Author: Great Harbor, Peter Island
This morning we woke up and motored to Cooper Island where we ate breakfast and prepared for our first dive of the day. During the dive, we learned how to use reels to navigate wrecks and we saw a stingray that was 6 feet long! After that dive, we ate lunch on our boat with Pure Joy when a rain shower hit and prompted a boat-wide rain dance party. After the dancing, we studied for our certification tests and set up our gear for the next wreck dive of the day. During that dive, we explored the inside of the wreck using our new wreck navigation skills. After our second dive, we motored back to GHP where we studied and made breakfast for dinner. After dinner cleanup, we went to Luna Kahuna to take our certification tests and the Dolphins presented their projects on Pure Joy. Our boat got the highest score on the test and we all got certified! We celebrated with brownies and settled on the trampoline to sleep.
