Staff Wrap Up

Location: West End, Tortola
Author: Alisa M.
What an incredible 15 days this had been! This Surprise crew has truly come together as a family and accomplished so much. As their instructors we couldn’t be more proud to see how far they’ve come as divers and budding scientists. Our Neptune’s have successfully navigated their way to their Advanced Open Water certifications, as well as collecting six new specialties along the way. We had a fearless buddy team in Noah and Fed, always the first ones in the water once the dive flag went up. The tri-squad of our lovely lady Neptune’s held strong by Gia, Georgia and Morgan. These chicks know how to have fun and were always the ones you wanted to hang out with on long safety stops. Over on the Dolphin side we saw some incredible research projects pumped out by some amazingly passionate individuals. Bailin was our walking and talking fish ID book, and the guy to go to if you couldn’t find the name of that one blue fish with the thing on it. Claudia and Cat may have had to stay out of the water due to health reasons but it sure didn’t hinder their work ethic and they put together a phenomenal project on ammonia levels in relation to fish populations.Oliver and Jolie were also a part of that group, and they each did fantastic jobs being the main divers collecting all the water samples and data for their project. Collin proved to be a great skipper and was the first to jump up and volunteer to helm the boat. Blaise rounded off our Dolphin program and our crew as the designated daredevil and master skier. This group has been so full of surprises and those who started off bashful and shy have really come out of their shells and proved to be some of the most goofy and funny shipmates we have had all summer. We have had such a blast getting to know this wonderful group of teenagers and watching them learn and grow. I am going to miss them so much and can’t wait to see them return to this vary dock next year with hugs and laughter. Surprise! I love you! Over!

Day 16 Wrap Up

Location: West End, Tortola
Author: Blaise L.
Today was the beginning of the end. We took our last dive this morning. It was fitting that it was the most beautiful reef yet. We are currently cleaning the boat from bow to stern. No one wants to go home. We have all made so many memories together. Surprise, the home so many of us have called home throughout the summer, will also leave the dock tomorrow morning and go back to her port of call. ActionQuest will have our final barbecue tonight, hopefully it will be the best. The end of this voyage also means the end of summer for many while others still have a couple weeks. Whether its the end of your ActionQuest experience or you still have a couple more years to come back, this will be an experience you will never forget. Surprise standing by on 72, out…

Day 15 Race Day

Location: The Bight, Norman Island
Author: Jolie M.
Today was a really busy day! We first woke up to a little James Brown and had delicious football shaped pancakes made by Alisa. After breakfast the Dolphin’s went turtle tagging while the Neptune’s went diving. No luck during turtle tagging, but it was still a good experience. When we finished drying off from all that, we then motored over to Road Town where we had an hour and a half to eat lunch and walk around. I had Gelato with Noah and Federico at a local shop. With full stomachs we got back onto our boat and got ready for the sailing race. Everyone put on blue sunscreen as war paint, an away we sailed! Though we lost the race it was fun to participate in anyways. The wind through our hair and on our faces, it was so much fun and I would definitely do it again if I could. I’m sad and happy at the same time that tomorrow is our last day. Since we haven’t seen our family for two weeks. I’m happy to go back home, but I’m also sad to leave because ActionQuest is really fun to be a part of. We took salty showers which means we jump in the ocean after we put soap on our bodies, and then rinse off with the freshwater for 15 seconds. For dinner the chefs made beans and rice. Then we squeezed and talked about our best friends and what our favorite part of the day was. My favorite part of the day was waking up to James Brown because it reminded me of my mom who I miss and love. Anyways overall I would say today was a good day and a very fun one too. If you ask me whether I would come back to ActionQuest, I definitely would!

Day 14

Location: Great Harbor, Peter Island
Author: CJ O.
Today’s breakfast consisted of french toast and fresh cut fruit prepared by Colin and Baline. After that we sailed to Cooper Island and the Dolphins did their first project dive while the Neptune’s went on their third wreck dive. After our dives, we had lunch which was deli sandwiches and chicken salad sandwiches. After that, the Dolphin’s got to do a fun dive and the Neptune’s went on their fourth wreck dive. Afterwards everyone was given time to study and work on their research projects. We then had dinner and Dolphins presented their projects while Neptune’s took their exams. We ended the night by all hanging out together after dinner.

Day 13

Location: Great Harbor, Peter Island
Author: Oliver P.
This morning we woke up and sailed to the port in which we started. We stayed at port for 3 hours and then sailed for 2 hours up to Great Harbour Peter. On the way over, the waves were really big, so when we went over then we would jump as the bow fell beneath us. This would give you a sense of weightlessness as you would be going up as the boat would be going down. After we moored up we dove on the Rhone anchor. The Rhone was a Royal Mail Ship that sunk in 1867. They had to cut their anchor because it was stuck in the middle of a hurricane. After the dive, some of us went waterskiing. I got up on on the knee board for the first time, but I also face planted a few times before that. After we got back to the boat we made Mexican food for dinner. After dinner some of us are going on a make up night dive and the rest our us our working on our projects or studying for our tests tomorrow. Overall, it was an amazing day in the BVI!
