Day 17 – Staff Update – Wrapping Up An Incredible Summer

Location: West End, Tortola
Author: Oscar
I can’t believe that this summer is coming to a close. It feels as though it was yesterday when the staff arrived on the docks of West End, Tortola in early June to set up for the first session of the summer. Now, we are putting away all of our sail training manuals and dive gear, pumping our scuba tanks for the last time, preparing them for their long wait until next summer. The dinghy hulls are being scrubbed, and their engines are spotless, while our monohulls and catamarans are being taken back to the Road Town docks one by one. Thinking back on our past sessions, I can’t help but feel incredibly proud for all that, our students have accomplished. Those who were on the dolphin program successfully presented their scientific findings in front of their peer and their instructors. They are now certified research, night, underwater digital photography and underwater naturalist divers. The dolphin students also dissected sharks and starfish and learned a lot about marine anatomy. Those on our Neptune program have taken their final exam and are now advanced divers! Not only are they certified advanced open water divers, but also they now hold specialties in: night, fish identification, boat, equipment and wreck diving. Every single one of our students has accomplished incredible things, and I am so very proud of all of them. Congratulations to all of our student for all that they have done! We hope to see you all down here next summer!

Day 16

Location: West End, Tortola
Author: Natalie D.
Today’s early start was particularly difficult for those who stayed up until the early hours of the morning finishing our cards to each other and staff. After we got everyone moving ant ate breakfast, we headed to the Indians for our last dive of the trip. While on our first dive 17 days ago, we descended as strangers, today we went in as best friends. Despite our heavy hearts that it was our last time underwater, the dive site and visibility could not have been better. After we surfaced we showed our boar some love and scrubbed, swept, and bleached every corner of Adonis. We docked in West End for the last time this summer. Our returning boat could not be more different than the boat that left; we left West End having known each other for 16 hours and today returned possibly a little too close after 16 days. Tonight is our last BBQ before our final night on Adonis.

Day 15 – Our Last Day At Sea

Location: The Bight, Norman Island
Author: Ethan W.
Today was an early-ish start. We had the amazing breakfast pancakes then the dolphins went turtle tagging again We saw a turtle and I touched it but it swam away and it went too deep so we couldn’t tag it. The Neptunes went on a dive and after everyone was back on their boats, we sailed over to Road Town leaving Great Harbor Peter for the last time. At Road Town, we got the famous ice cream. Once we were back onboard, we had a dive side/Lifeworks race. Cat on Great White came in first. We ended at the Bight where we had one of my favorite meals, franks and beans. During dinner, we ate and watched the amazing sunset. Tonight we write the cards and that means that the trip is coming to an end.

Day 14 – Another Wonderful Day On The Water

Location: Great Harbor, Peter Island
Author: Madeline S.
This morning we woke up, got ready, ate breakfast and then sailed away to go to Wreck Alley. While sailing, we listened to music and had a wonderful time. Some people were having conversations and getting closer with the staff. We started the day off by going on a dive. Dolphins either worked on their projects or went diving for more research data. The Neptunes did two wreck dives at Wreck Alley. Later during the day, we moved spots and some of us were taking a nap. The staff pulled a prank on us and afterward made everyone laugh. For dinner tonight we had breakfast for dinner. Thanks to the chefs, Natalie and Emma for a great dinner. After dinner, we did the squeeze.

Day 13 – Visit Home (West End)

Location: Great Harbor, Peter Island
Author: Dylan G.
We started the day with breakfast underway. We had cereal while we motored over to West End for two hours of shore time. While in West End some went shopping at Latitude 18 or Arawak. Others ate at D’Best Cup or Pussers for brunch/ an early lunch. When we were shuttled back to the boats, we set off towards GHP for a dive and some down time to hang out and swim with our boat. The water was warm and spirits were high while jumping off midships. After a nice swim we hung our as a boat and talked about stuff. The day flew by, within a blink it was dinnertime. We had Mexican food for dinner, which is by far my favorite night. Torin joined us for dinner. The rest of the night we studied for our test and prepared for our presentations.
