Day 18- RMS Rhone Wreck Dive Day

Location: Great Harbor, Peter Island

Today was definitely an awesome day. We rose early and shoveled down our breakfast of cereal, all prepared to motor from Peter Island to our next anchorage in Salt Island. Smudge briefed us on the story of the Royal Mail Steamer the Rone, which at that point in time as considered unsinkable. The morning voyage was consumed by studying our sailing manuals in preparation for our VHF and skipper’s exam later this evening. Once we arrived at Salt Island we took Drift over to Zourite to take our dive. Chris, Leo and I dove with Alan to the stern, where we saw the commemorative plaque of the wreck and it’s designation as a national park. It was an incredible dive, my first as a certified open water diver. I’m really excited to see the footage Chris got on his GoPro because we left it on for almost the entire time. After the dive we got to hike the Salt Island national park. We also visited the grave of the sailors who died on the Rhone, which is located on the island. After some more study on the motor back to Peter Island, the advanced sailors took our VHF exams, which we all passed. Here’s to looking forward to the flotilla skipper’s exam tonight after breakfast for dinner, which is sure to be excellent!
