Getting To Know Argo

We woke-up at 7:00 or 7:10 for those who tried to get some extra sleep, and had a breakfast of eggs and watermelon. From breakfast we all split up in to three groups and learned about the function and the contents of all the areas on the Argo. We learned about the kitchen and where all the food is stored from Brittany in the saloon. In the chart-house Chris taught us how to plot, and navigate the ship and how to check the engine. Lastly we learned about all the things on the deck of Argo. Ben showed us where all the lines are stored, how to steer the helm, how to operate the propane tanks, and how to open up all the hatches. After we learned all about Argo, everyone jumped into the ocean to escape the heat of the day. Once everyone was refreshed we made ourselves sandwiches for lunch. After everyone finished their sandwiches it was time for the very anticipated assignment of watch teams. The watch team groups determined what task one would be performing in the case of an emergency like a fire, man overboard, and abandoning the ship. We walked through all of that tasks that each group and person must do. I found out that fire hoses are extremely fun, but a bit of a pain to put away. After each watch team reviewed their duties, everyone chipped in to prepare the boat for tomorrow’s passage to Virgin Gorda. I also had to check to make sure everything was ready for tomorrow, which included me going down and working in the engine room. Among other things, I checked the oil, hydraulic fluid, and the generators. After another relaxing period we had delicious pork-chops with salad and stir-fried vegetables for dinner after our nightly “squeeze”. We finally wound down the day with an introduction to our Basic Seamanship class, otherwise known as MTE, and our Introduction to Oceanography class.
