Day 13 – Small Boat Sailing

Location: English Harbour, Antigua
Today was one of our last days in Antigua. For most of us, Antigua is our favorite island so far. Today has been personally my favorite day of the trip because it was small boat sailing day. In the morning we walked over to Antigua Yacht Club, where Matt, Marco and I rigged up some sport 16s for us to sail. Boat 1, consisting of Kris, Alex, Alex and Cristian worked on running (going straight downwind) and gybing while boat 2, consisting of Matt, Billy, Marco and I just went sailing around in a swimming pool while sinking and capsizing. At around 1 in the afternoon we went back to the boat for a nice bowl of Ramen. After lunch, Matt, Billy, Alex C., Kris and I went back out on the boats to sail in some races. Matt and I came up around the last buoy to win in the first race. In the second race Kris, Alex and Billy crossed the finish line first due to minor issues with Matt and my boat. In the last race, the course began from the far buoy across the harbor and into the docks. Matt and I had some trouble at the start crashing into the start mark. We had to do some 360s but were already far behind. Kris, Alex, and Billy sailed well but were no match for Matt and I pulling ahead as we were pulling into the marina to win. During the time after lunch, Marco, Christian and Lydia were at the beach in awe watching us race. Just after dinner we had our first advanced sail chat about navigation and charting. All in all we had a great day in Antigua.
