Time passes in a strange way at ActionQuest. While on one hand its hard to believe we’ve already reached the halfway mark of the session, it also feels like we’ve been together for much longer. The past ten days have been a remarkable journey both literal and otherwise. Greg, Meg and I have sailed many miles with this remarkable crew of shipmates and have watched them grow both individually and together as a team along the way. Richard, Kate, Aaron, Duncan, and Eli-our Neptune shipmates-are well on their way to their Advanced Open Water certification, having completed dives in specialty areas such as naturalist, deep, navigation, and boat. Over the past few days, they’ve been concentrating on their night and wreck diver specialties, exploring sites in Mountain Point, Great Harbour, and the wrecks of both the Fearless and the RMS Rhone. Zak, Christian, Marlena, and Hailey have been doing their fair share of diving as well, working on their night, naturalist, digital photography, and research diver specialties with other dive side Dolphins. They’ve even designed their own research project on parrot-fish behavior to be completed over the next week. Ionnis, Jamie, Lindsey, and Mercy, our soon-to-be rescue divers, have been hard at work learning how to respond to in water and out of water emergencies. They’ve mastered CPR, calming panicked divers, and rescuing unresponsive divers. They’re anticipating the scenarios to come over the next ten days, which will allow them to test their newly acquired skills. From the staff’s perspective, it has been an honor and a pleasure to work with such an amazing team of young adults. From the galley to the classroom, from swapping stories in the salon to heartfelt squeezes, we’ve been having a great time getting to know our shipmates. Greg, Meg, and I are looking forward to all that the coming days have to offer-both on the surface and underwater.
